Ofﬁce buildings A, B, and C of Porta Nuova Garibaldi have received LEED™ pre-certiﬁ cation level silver. These exemplary buildings have been developed around a general sustainability strategy that touches six major themes: location, materials, water, energy, air and environmental quality.By strategically locating these buildings less than 0.8km (0.5 miles) of several transportation hubs, the goal is to encourage public transportation, and to reduce the reliance on nonrenewable resources. During the construction phase, the buildings will use recycled materials and divert at least 50% of construction debris. This will help to reduce the impact that the design and construction phase can have on the utilization of the resources. Building energy consumption will be reduced by 37% through the use of energy efﬁ cient high performance glazing, energy efﬁ cient heating and cooling techniques such as: river-water heat extraction/rejection, water-to-water heat pumps, and high efﬁ ciency lighting and daylight controls. Within the buildings, the speciﬁ cation of low-ﬂ ow ﬁ xtures and automatic sensors help to achieve a 30% reduction in potable water use. In addition, recycling receptacles are provided in the building to encourage occupants to recycle (paper, metals, cardboard and plastics). Finally, indoor air quality is fundamental to maintaining a healthy work environment. This goal is achieved though high rations of ﬁ ltered outside air and increased ventilation rates which leads to a 30% increase in outdoor air delivery with a ventilation rate of 10 l/s per person. Building monitoring systems ensure optimum air quality and thermal comfort. To help create a desirable working environment a direct line of outdoor light will reach 90% of all occupied areas.
